FAQ
GENERAL
What is pellet smoking?
Pellet smoking is a barbecue method that uses compressed wood pellets as fuel, with a fan system to distribute heat evenly—much like an outdoor convection oven. The result? Consistent temperatures, an easy cooking process, and deep, natural smoky flavor. At Southern Smoke, we craft our pellets from 100% New Zealand-grown hardwood, ensuring rich, authentic taste in every cook.
Are Southern Smoke pellets compatible with Traeger, Pit Boss, Weber, and other pellet grills?
Yes! Our hardwood pellets work seamlessly with all major pellet grill brands, delivering premium smoke and long, clean burns.
Can I use wood pellets in a gas or charcoal grill?
Absolutely! For charcoal grills, sprinkle a handful of pellets over hot coals for an extra smoky boost. If you’re using a gas grill, a smoking pellet tube or box is a great way to infuse your food with rich, wood-fired flavor.
What makes Southern Smoke pellets different from other wood pellets?
Our pellets are made from 100% pure New Zealand hardwood—no fillers, no artificial flavors, and no shortcuts. We craft them in small batches to ensure premium quality, long burn times, and a clean, flavorful smoke. By sourcing locally and using sustainable practices, we deliver a product that not only enhances your barbecue but also supports New Zealand forestry.
Do your pellets contain any fillers or additives?
No. Our pellets are made from pure hardwood, with no added oils, binders, or artificial flavoring—just natural wood for an authentic smoke every time.
How are Southern Smoke pellets flavoured?
The flavour comes straight from the wood itself. Unlike some brands that use artificial additives, our pellets rely on the natural smoking properties of premium New Zealand hardwoods to bring out deep, rich flavours.
What foods taste best with Southern Smoke pellets?
Our hardwood pellets enhance everything from low-and-slow brisket to flame-grilled steaks, smoky seafood, roasted veggies, and even wood-fired pizza. Whether you’re cooking wild game, chicken, or plant-based dishes, our pellets add unbeatable depth and character to your food.
How long do Southern Smoke pellets burn?
On most pellet grills, our pellets burn at an estimated rate of:
- Low heat (95–175°C / 200–350°F): About 0.5 lb per hour
- High heat (230°C+ / 450°F+): Around 2.5 lbs per hour
